So its the internet and not the computer

So as you can see I’ve had some slow internet access issues over the past few weeks. At first I thought it might be related to my home pc because the machine is not the latest and greatest. At first I thought I needed some sort of slow computer fix because the internet access seemed slow.

But after reading up on the subject it appears that the problem might be ISP related because of the speed problems. Another thing that I had to check out was possible virus or spyware issues. Its more common than most people really know and often slow computer performance is spyware related. These types of programs not only slow down your internet access but they can slow down the whole performance of your machine. They operate in the background and they use up system resources.

So my quest to answer why is my computer running slow involves two different processes. First I have to determine if my internet access is actually being delivered at the proper speed. If the proper speed is being delivered than I need to see if my pc is having some sort of speed performance issue. The search to problems continues.

Related to that slow internet thing

Interesting study just published by the folks at Harvard in relation to internet speed. You can view the whole report at the Harvard University Berkman Center for Internet & Society website. http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/

Still moving slowly

Well in the past we have written about how everyone should be enjoying super fast internet speed and how you can test your machine to make sure that you are receiving fast connection speeds.

The problem is that many companies are now promoting really, really fast speeds and some people are still not getting what they are paying for.

But here is the key question for anyone who is shopping for high speed internet access. Do you really need the latest and greatest from your internet service provider? Do you really have a slow internet connection based on what you are currently receiving.

The problem is that most people really do not need any of these super fast connections. Unless you are downloading complete movies and tons of other large media files you would not see a real benefit from these super fast speeds. the usually high service of anywhere from 3 to 6 mbps is more than enough. Those are not slow internet speed when you compare them to what you where receiving even two or three years ago.

Plus if you mostly only use the internet to browse web pages, download email and maybe stream some internet radio stations your current slow internet connection is likely fine. If you want to watch full screen TV shows on your computer sure you’ll have a problem but than thats why you have a TV in your living room. The computer is not yet the full service entertainment station.
